Shannon Terhune earned the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Virginia Military Institute and was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1992. He also earned his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, his MBA from Webster University, a Master of Divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS), and his Master of Applied Theology in Preaching. He is currently in the Ph.D. in preaching program at SEBTS.

As a Naval Officer, Shannon had notable tours of duty at sea and leadership positions in nuclear shipyards ashore. He earned his Surface Warfare Officer designation on the USS Trenton. He performed duties as structural engineer and dry docking officer for the heavy-lift recovery of the damaged warship USS Cole in 2000. Shannon was selected as the first Chief Engineer of the carrier USS George H.W. Bush in 2006 serving in that position for four years.

He became a full-time seminary student after retiring from active duty in 2012. Shannon is concurrently Pastor of Raleigh Heights Baptist Church in Chesapeake and President of FBC. He teaches New Testament and Theology.
